Orange Juice and Adderall: Why It Destroys Your Dose
Table of Contents
Mixing orange juice and Adderall is a common mistake that damages medication efficacy through two biological mechanisms.
1. Gut Absorption Blocked by Acid
Adderall relies on a balanced pH. Orange juice contains citric acid and Vitamin C, which lowers stomach pH. In an acidic environment, amphetamine molecules become ionized and cannot easily pass through the intestinal wall. A percentage of the dose passes unabsorbed.
2. Accelerated Renal Excretion
Vitamin C acidifies urine, which signals the kidneys to clear the amphetamine. In an acidic urinary environment, the excretion rate of Adderall increases significantly, shortening the duration of your dose.
The Solution: Alkaline Hydration
Avoid orange juice, grapefruit juice, and heavy Vitamin C supplements for at least 1 hour before and 2 hours after taking your medication. Opt for an alkaline electrolyte mix or water in the morning.
